The City of Evanston announced in a news release today that it has secured memoranda of understanding with its Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) patrol and International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) employee unions regarding the City’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for staff.
The policy, effective November 15, requires all City employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or to submit negative test results weekly to the City’s Health & Human Services Department.
“Our police officers and firefighters have served our community courageously throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am grateful to members of both unions for taking this additional, critical step to keep our community safe and healthy,” said Mayor Daniel Biss. “I would also like to thank Interim City Manager Kelley Gandurski and her team for coordinating the productive conversations that led to these agreements.”
“Thank you to the FOP Patrol and IAFF unions, Health & Human Services Department, Law Department and Human Resources Division for working together in good faith to reach these agreements, which will make our entire community safer,” said Interim City Manager Kelley Gandurski. “I greatly appreciate our entire City staff team for their cooperation and continued hard work during this very challenging time in our history.”
"Since the onset of the pandemic, firefighters and paramedics have worked extremely hard to keep the City of Evanston and its residents safe,” said Local 742 President Billy Lynch. “They have sacrificed their time, personal safety and contractual benefits to advance the City's COVID-19 response. Deservedly, their voice was heard through ratifying this collaborative MOU. We hope the City will continue to work with Local 742 as we navigate these challenges together. Thank you to Interim City Manager Gandurski and her staff for approaching this issue the right way."
The City of Evanston continues to work directly with the FOP Sergeant and AFSCME unions to reach memoranda of understanding for remaining City employees covered by collective bargaining agreements.
