Alicia Guy is the mom of Aniyah, the 14-year-old girl who was shot along with four others (Carl Dennison, 17, was killed) at the gas station on Greenbay Road and Asbury on November 28.

Alicia and Aniyah’s aunt Olivia have been trying to spend as much time as possible at the hospital while Aniyah recovers from serious injuries—she was shot in the head.

Olivia says Aniyah is a miracle—she is stable and doing better after weeks of touch-and-go.

But Alicia, whose son Avery, 21, was shot and killed in Evanston just two months before her daughter was injured, is reeling from these traumas and can use help with a couple of months’ bills and repairing her car, which broke down recently, and that she needs so she can easily visit her daughter.

As we talk about strategies, responses, and solutions to gun violence in Evanston and throughout the country, let’s make sure to remember family members who are left traumatized even as many of us absorb the latest news, shake our heads, and move on.

That Aniyah is doing better is heartening. What I’ve learned from Olivia is that Aniyah is an amazing hair stylist, a self-taught artist, an honor-roll student who loves sports, a funny, loving, caring person with she has big dreams.

Let’s help the family through this incredibly tough time.
