Really sad news from PEER Services Executive Director Maureen McDonnell about the passing of long-time Peer Services Executive Director Kate Mahoney.

May her memory be for a blessing. Dear Friends,

I am writing today to share the sad news that Kate Mahoney, the long-time executive director of PEER Services, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, after a long illness. Kate was a friend and colleague to so many, and she will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and colleagues today.

Kate worked at PEER for over 30 years, including 25 years as Executive Director. She built PEER Services into a robust organization that provides high-quality substance use prevention and treatment services to Evanston and neighboring communities across Northern Cook County. Her pioneering work in youth prevention and her tireless fight against stigma made contributions locally and nationally, setting the standard for important work that continues to this day.

I met Kate when we were both advocating for more resources for community substance use disorder treatment through the Illinois Association for Behavioral Health. Her deep understanding of recovery and the ways that community services support recovery helped a generation of leaders learn, grow and do better.

Kate was supportive and generous to me when I joined PEER as executive director in 2017. For that I will always be grateful.

Covid-19 makes collective grieving so much more difficult. As information about memorial services becomes available, we will share it with you. May those of you who knew Kate find comfort in her memory and in her legacy of love, compassion and service.

With deep gratitude,

Maureen McDonnell Executive Director

I interviewed Kate in 2017 about her work.
