As you all know, after Northminster's Black Lives Matter sign was defaced last week, neighbors and community members responded by posting their own Black Lives Matter signs in the church's front yard. Last night all those signs were stolen.
A police report has been filed.
Please make or purchase more signs and bring them to the church at 2515 Central Park, Evanston. Signs designed by Evanston artist Ben Blount are available here. “This has never been about Northminster, not really," he told me.
"The first time, the vandals sought to erase people of color from the conversation by cutting them out of our sign. Last night, they sought to erase the kind and supportive acts of our neighbors.
How do we explain to the dear child who wrote 'Hate has no home here' on a little sign and placed it in our yard that someone stole their sign? It makes me sad, but I’m certain it will make the community all the more determined to stand for equity and justice, and the hope they represent for our future together."
